On October 3rd and 4th the new European Council of Lay Dominican Fraternities (ECLDF) gathered together for the first time in Huissen (The Netherlands). The priory of the friars here is one of the places nominated for the next Assembly.
Although spread over Europe and living our lives at our own places, we keep on praying together. This time we use the morning prayer of José A. Muñoz Mata, which he made for the European Assembly in Bologna last May.
The European council of Lay Dominican Fraternities (ECDLF) appeals to the Dominican lay fraternities to make a concrete and active commitment in welcoming Iraqi refugee families and responding to the various calls of the threatened populations.
This urgent call is initiated by the chapter of the French Dominican laity, which took place from the 22nd to the 25th of August. There were almost 700 Dominican lay brothers and sisters in Iraq and their situation is particularly complex and difficult.
Pilgrimage takes many forms and variations; it is oriented to a goal at the end of which we anticipate the result of our journey. In the context of the forthcoming Great Jubilee of the Dominican Order, this year is devoted to the topic Lay Dominicans and preaching. And as preaching is associated with pilgrimage, the European Council of Lay Dominican fraternities came up with the idea of the Pilgrim Image of St. Dominic travelling from country to country across Europe.
On the last day of the Assembly the Master of the Order visited the European Assembly.
On the last day of the Assembly Eva Zudorova from the Slovak province held a meditation during the morning prayer.
The 9th Assembly gathered together in Bologna has elected a new council. The members for the next four years are Leny Beemer, Arnaud Kientz, Aksel Misje, Olga Rozhmikova and Eva Zudorova. The master of the Order gave dispensation for a extended period for Klaus Bornewasser as a member of the international council.
On the 24th May the Dominican Order celebrates worldwide the Feast of the Translation, the solemn transfer of the relics of St. Dominic to the tomb in Bologna. This feast brightened the Assembly day.
